Delta Township boat firm relocating locally, poised for expansion - Lansing State Journal
As company President Scott VanWagenen tells it, a key turning point for Manitou Pontoon Boats came years before the Great Recession. In 2004, an employee posed a simple query to VanWagenen: If he could do anything to improve on the basic pontoon boat, what would he do. “I said, ‘I would make them perform like a runabout,’” VanWagenen recalled last week. “He asked if he could play around with the product and find a way to make them perform like that, and I said yes. The development helped Triton Industries, which makes the Manitou boat line, emerge from the recession stronger that it was before. In July, the 29-year-old boatmaker announced it will build a new headquarters and production facility in a vacant warehouse on South Lowell Road in Watertown Township, west of Capital Region International Airport, later this year. At about 160,000 square feet, the new facility will be three times larger than the company’s current quarters on Northport Drive in Delta Township, allowing Triton to pursue an “aggressive” growth plan that could boost its workforce by 50 percent... Sales terms were not disclosed, but VanWagenen said the company will invest nearly $4 million in the new facility. The company searched for about year before settling on the Watertown Township facility, he said. “We wanted to stay in the Lansing area,” he said. A lot of our workers have been here since the beginning, and they are very skilled at what they do. ”. The company worked closely with the Lansing Economic Area Partnership, Watertown Township officials and other agencies to find a suitable site,... Bob Trezise, president and CEO of LEAP, referred questions about Manitou’s relocation to Watertown Township Manager Jennifer Tubbs, who did not return a telephone message left by the Lansing State Journal on Wednesday. Triton was founded in 1985 and moved to its current space in 1996. Scott VanWagenen, his wife, Lanette, and her brother, Tom Schupbach, remain the majority stockholders, VanWagenen said. The privately owned company doesn’t release profit figures, but VanWagenen said revenues will be about $35 million this year.
